Hazel doesn't understand why Augustus feels it is so important to make your mark. But by not trying to, she leaves ends up doing it herself.
- Water: Without water life would not be possible. Augustus Waters makes life possible for Hazel, by showing her that she can still live her life even through her disease. Water is present in Augustus in both his eyes (which were blue) and his name.
- The swing set: Represents childhood.
On the airplane, Hazel and Augustus both start the same movie at the same time, but Augustus' starts before hers does. This implies that Augustus knew more about the future than Hazel did, since he already knew about his disease. He knew about what was happening in the movie first, and he knew what was going to happen to him before Hazel did.
